Ways to Remedy Split Ends

Posted by Vien

Split ends are a problem that affects the look and health of our hair. They can be caused by all sorts of factors, such as dryness, heat styling, and color damage. The good news is that split ends can be remedied using several different methods. Below are some tips for how to remedy split ends in your hair.

Detangle your hair.

Detangling is the first step to preventing split ends. It's a good idea to detangle your hair before you wash it, but if you forget or didn't have time, just do it when you get out of the shower.

Depending on your hair type and length, you may need either a wide tooth comb or brush. If your strands are incredibly fine and short (think: pixie cut), a pick can be helpful as well.

A great way to gently remove any knots is by starting at the bottom of your locks and working upward toward the roots in small sections of hair — this will prevent breakage from occurring near where these tips are most likely to happen later on down the line!

Products to help you:

The flexibility of the bristles ensures pain-free detangling while the soft ballpoint tips massage the scalp to stimulate blood circulation. Perfect for all hair types, wigs, and hair with extensions.

These distinct combs feature rigid teeth that provide grip and control, while seamless, smooth construction prevents hair from snagging.
*How to use: Starting at the roots, gently work the comb throughout sections using easy strokes. Repeat until reaching desired shape and smoothness, going over the entire head.

Cut the right way.

If you're dealing with split ends, cutting them off will give your locks a fresh start.

It's important to cut your hair when it starts to grow out, so you can get rid of any dead or damaged strands before they become too noticeable. It's also important not to cut your hair too short since this can cause more breakage and lead to more splits.

Before you grab your scissors though, make sure to have a professional do it for you. Cutting your own hair will only exacerbate the problem!

Modify heat styling habits.

  • Use heat on wet hair, instead of letting it air dry. This will help minimize the effect of damage caused by dry split ends that can become brittle and break off easily when they're exposed to heat.
  • Use a lower setting on any curling or flat iron you use to style your hair. As a general rule, the higher the temperature setting on these tools, the more likely it is that you'll end up with damaged strands—and split ends are no exception! If you have thin or fine hair that tends to get frizzy at higher temperatures, look for an option with multiple settings to choose one appropriate for your needs (i.e., avoid excessive drying).
  • Use a heat protectant spray in combination with any styling tool before applying direct heat—ideally, one specifically designed for this purpose.

Products to help you:

Protect from heat styling, add shine and nourish your strands. Seal cuticles to reduce hair fall and (heat/UV) breakage. Revitalizes hair and mends split ends.
*How to use: Mist evenly throughout damp hair, from roots to ends before blow drying. On dry hair let absorb to the touch prior to heat styling.

Heat Protector spray is not only the perfect heat protection for the hair, but it also provides sleekness, softness, and shine.
*How to use: Before straightening, spray Heat Protector into sections of dry hair.

Avoid certain products and processes.

Alcohol in shampoos and conditioners can strip the hair of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness and breakage. If you have dry or damaged hair, it's best to avoid all-over treatments that contain alcohol. If you need a deep conditioning treatment, choose one that's free of added ingredients.

Silicones coat the hair with an artificial layer of oil (which prevents moisture loss) making it look shinier at first glance—but they also build up over time and cause build-up on your scalp, which makes your roots feel heavy while weighing down your ends so they don't move as much when you run your fingers through them! This gives them an unnatural appearance since there's no movement in those split ends; they just sit there looking really bad! Avoid using silicone-based products like gels or serums whenever possible; instead, try using leave-in conditioners instead since they'll give similar results without causing build-up issues down the road too quickly!

Use leave-in conditioning agents or hair masks.

  • Use leave-in conditioning agents or hair masks. (Avoid heavy products with a lot of alcohol.) These products contain moisturizers and proteins that help your hair repair itself, as well as seal in moisture so that your hair doesn’t get dry and brittle. A good rule of thumb is to use them once or twice a week, depending on your personal needs (the more damaged the hair, the more frequently you should use one).
  • Deep condition your hair with a leave-in conditioner and heat. If you have time for an at-home treatment, deep conditioning is essential to any split-end remedy routine. Simply apply a generous amount of product to your ends and let it sit while you shower (you can always wash off any excess). After towel drying, wrap up in a warm towel for 20 minutes or so—it will help penetrate it deeper into each strand. Then blow dry as usual!
  • Use a deep conditioner weekly. Even if you don’t want to take extra steps like deep conditioning treatments every week (and there are definitely some who don’t), having some sort of weekly treatment scheduled is key because it will keep everything balanced and healthy down there at the base where all those split ends begin growing out from their roots.

Products to help you:

A leave-in conditioner that protects the hair from heat damage. Yarok’s hair care all-star is a triple threat as the ultimate detangler, heat protector, and leave-in conditioning spray.
*How to use: For Wet hair, heat protection and/or styling and nourishment, spray on wet ends or evenly throughout the length of hair. Then blow-dry and style. For Dry hair, spray on areas that need texture revived. For detangling, use all-over damp hair, including ends.

A protein-rich, argan-oil-infused hair mask that restores and helps repair dry, weakened hair to improve texture, elasticity, and manageability.
*How to use: After shampooing, apply a generous amount to towel-dried hair and comb through. Leave on for 5 to 7 minutes. Rinse and finish with conditioner. Use once weekly, less frequently as hair improves.

Consider ending your hair extensions or braids too soon.

It is advisable that you should not wear extensions for more than a few months. It's best to have a professional remove them at the end of the term by using a solution that will dissolve the bond between your hair and extensions.

Conclusion

If you follow these tips, you can avoid split ends and keep your hair healthy. Your hair is an important part of your appearance, so it’s a good idea to take care of it!
